The charm of Norway...

My time in Norway was a truly memorable experience. Having grown up in the countryside, I immediately felt at home surrounded by Norway's vast landscapes, peaceful atmosphere, and strong connection to nature. The clean, fresh air and the quiet, tranquil environment provided a welcome escape from the pace of everyday life. When it comes to my top picks in Norway, Bergen has to be first on the list. As the gateway to the fjords, it offers the perfect introduction to some of the country's most breathtaking scenery. Equally unforgettable is Tromsø, the gateway to the Arctic, with its stunning mountain views and famous cable car providing spectacular panoramas across the city and surrounding fjords. During peak season, Tromsø is by far the most magical place I visited to witness the Northern Lights dancing across the night sky. I also spent a great deal of time in Eidfjord, one of Norway's hidden gems nestled deep within the fjord landscape. Its peaceful surroundings, dramatic mountains, and authentic charm made it one of my favourite nooks and crannies of the country. Another highlight was Honningsvåg, a charming old fishing town rich in maritime history, which served as the starting point for one of the most beautiful mountain hikes of my trip, rewarding me with spectacular views across the Arctic landscape.

Is Madeira just for the oldies?

Who said Madeira was just for the oldies? Well it certainly wasn't me... I can safely say that this was one of my favourite places I have ever visited. The island perfectly combines adventure, culture, and stunning scenery. No trip would be complete without trying the traditional Poncha, Madeira's famous local drink, before taking a thrilling ride down the hills in a Monte Toboggan. Watching the drivers expertly guide the wicker sleds while wearing the traditional Carapuça hats, a style dating back to the 19th century, is a unique experience that captures the island's heritage. If you enjoy walking, Madeira is paradise, with countless trails winding through dramatic mountains, forests, and coastal landscapes. One of my highlights was taking the cable car up to the Botanical Gardens, home to beautiful exotic plants and colourful birds, including magnificent blue-and-yellow macaws. And for those of us from Britain who enjoy finding a good Irish bar abroad, make your way to The Irish Pub – Sports Bar on the seafront, the perfect place to relax with a drink and soak up the atmosphere after a day of exploring. One non-negotiable recommendation is steak on the stone at Jangada Ra II in Funchal. This family-run restaurant serves what is, in my opinion, the best steak I have ever eaten. Cooked to your liking on a hot stone at the table, it is a simple but unforgettable dining experience and one of the culinary highlights of the island.

Near, far, lets visit Austria

One of the greatest luxuries of working with people from so many different nationalities is the friendships you build along the way. Over time, colleagues become lifelong friends, and when you visit their home cities, they transform into your own personal tour guides. A private tour for free—how cool is that? During my time at sea, my friend Victoria and I even got matching butterfly tattoos, so it only felt right that we visited the Schmetterlinghaus (Butterfly House) in Vienna together. It was a special way to reconnect and revisit a shared memory. I loved learning about Vienna's different districts and found the city's subway system incredibly easy to use, even when navigating signs and announcements in German. Another highlight was wandering through the breathtaking Belvedere Palace, once the home of Prince Eugene of Savoy and now one of Austria's most impressive art museums. Exploring the magnificent palace interiors and strolling through the beautifully maintained gardens offered a fascinating glimpse into Vienna's rich history, culture, and architectural grandeur.
